Saladmaster International Salad Extravaganza in Support of PCRM - August 11, 2012

Viernes , 08/10/2012 - 3:09pm -- Saladmaster
International Salad Extravaganza

Continuing this Saturday, August 11 is the International Salad Extravaganza in which Saladmaster will be sponsoring a world-wide awareness day in support of one of the organization’s partners, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).

With nearly 12 million cancer survivors and 26 million people living with diabetes in the United States – and many more cases in other countries around the world – there is an urgent need for a new direction in battling dietetic diseases. The right food choices can reduce the risk of developing life threatening chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and increase the chance of treatment and survival once diagnosed. The Food for Life nutrition and cooking class program from PCRM is the first of its kind to offer community-based nutrition education and cooking classes on the power of food for health. Since 2001 the Food for Life classes have been educating the public by translating complex research on the link between diet and diseases into simple and practical cooking tips that turn every meal into a dose of healthful nutrition.

Since 2008, Saladmaster has been dedicated to helping advance PCRM’s message by providing the Saladmaster Healthy Solutions Cooking System to Food for Life instructors to use in the program’s cooking class demonstrations, because we believe that how we prepare our foods is just as important to our health as the food choices themselves. Saladmaster Authorized Dealers have opened up their offices to PCRM’s Food for Life instructors to use as venues for conducting the classes. As an Educational Alliance Program (EAP) Partner with PCRM, Saladmaster Dealerships have the opportunity to attend an educational and nutrition training course with Saladmaster’s corporate team and PCRM’s staff to become certified EAP partners in delivering the Food for Life cooking classes and healthy eating message in their offices within and beyond U.S. borders.

As two leaders in their respective fields that share in the same philosophy of teaching people how to prepare healthful, delicious meals, PCRM and Saladmaster are working together to provide a path to share empowering information about how simple, everyday choices can improve health and well-being.

PCRM relies on contributions and donations to fund their efforts and this special International Extravaganza awareness day, sponsored by Saladmaster, will help raise funds for the organization to further spread the knowledge of its live-saving information.

On-going Development in the GK777 Saladmaster Village

Viernes , 08/03/2012 - 2:20pm -- Saladmaster
On-going Development in the GK777 Salad master Village

As a result to monetary donations raised by the Saladmaster organization, construction for a multi-purpose hall has commenced in the Saladmaster Village in Pototan, Iloilo, Philippines. This hall will serve as the venue for the village’s religious gatherings, recreational events and other necessary meetings as well as the temporary educational center for the children living in the village. Also, a permanent entrance gate and perimeter fence for the village is in development, which will provide a safe environment for all members of the community.

Supplies and materials for these on-going developments began to arrive on site several days before the start date of construction, planned for Sunday, July 29. Youth and other volunteers will come together in a spirit of communal unity to make these projects possible.

With every advancement in the Salad master Village – made possible through the efforts of the Saladmaster organization and Gawad Kalinga (GK) and its volunteers – we come one step closer to GK’s vision of a slum-free, squatter-free nation built on dignity, peace and hope.

International Salad Extravaganza in Support of GK777 - July 21, 2012

Viernes , 07/20/2012 - 1:25pm -- Saladmaster
International Salad Extravaganza

The International Salad Extravaganza will be in full gear this Saturday, July 21, as Saladmaster hosts a worldwide GK777 Day. On this special day, Saladmaster will promote and raise awareness for the Philippines-based partner organization.

Gawad Kalinga (GK), which means "To Give Care" translated in English, is officially known as the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation. A poverty alleviation and nation-building movement, Gawad Kalinga is building a nation empowered by people with faith and patriotism; a nation made up of caring and sharing communities dedicated to eradicate poverty and restore human dignity.

"The thing that makes Gawad Kalinga long term, is that not only do they have good intentions, but they also have good structure and philosophy about not just giving someone a home, but also helping those folks become good community citizens and sending their kids to school, and changing their paradigm that keeps people down. They teach people to be responsible to change their lives, not just be given something," says Keith Peterson, President of Saladmaster.

Saladmaster and its participating dealers and consultants will be raising funds on July 21 in order to continue to build homes in Pototan, Iloilo, Philippines for people that have been displaced by poverty and war. Enough funds have been raised to build 50 homes in the village, and groundbreaking took place in December 2007. It is not only about the money, but about reminding each other of the value we have as human beings and helping restore dignity to people who have lost hope. Battling Diabetes with Healthy Cooking

Miércoles , 06/20/2012 - 1:13pm -- Saladmaster
eating healthy, whole grain recipes, cooking light recipes, cookware reviews

With millions of people worldwide battling diabetes, this disease is currently the fastest growing disease in the world. While it is widely known that people with diabetes may also suffer from other ailments such as heart disease and kidney failure, which leads to shorter lifespans, studies futher confirm a correlation between diabetes and vision impairment.

An article published in the USA Today, Diabetes Epidemic Brings Spike in Related Eye Disease, reveals data from an analysis by a group of researchers sponsored by Prevent Blindness America and the National Eye Institute. Data showed that there was an 89% increase from 2000 - 2010 in the number of people with a condition called diabetic retinopathy, in which high blood sugar causes small blood vessels to swell and leak into the retina. This causes blurred vision and can sometimes lead to blindness if not treated. A 2008 study, found that 4.2 million adults had the disease, which is largerly due to the diabetes epidemic, and is the leading cause of blindness in adults.

By adopting a healthier lifestyle and eating healthy there is a lot you can do to help manage or prevent diabetes and therefore vision impairment due to diabetic retinopathy. Cookware reviews show The Saladmaster® healthy cooking system helps you on your quest for healthy eating, control your weight, help when cooking light recipes, and decrease your risk for diabetes by reducing the fat in your diet and eliminating cooking oils during the cooking process. Suggestions for the type of recipes one should be focused on are fish recipes, whole grain recipes, vegetarian Indian recipes, and salad recipes - healthy choices in general. Furthermore, the method of cooking maximizes nutrition and flavor by maintaining the essential natural nutrients found in foods throughout the cooking process when cooking light recipes. These natural vitamins and minerals strengthen the body's immune system, are a key element in healthy eating which, in turn, helps fight off disease.

How Foods Affect Cancer Prevention

Miércoles , 06/13/2012 - 11:38am -- Katherine Lawrence
How Foods Affect Cancer Prevention

Scientists have been researching the influence of diet and cancer for decades and have accumulated a large body of evidence linking the two. According to the National Cancer Institute, 35 - 60 percent of cancers are directly attributable to our diet. This means we have much more influence over our health than we originally thought. Based on this research, the ideal diet is high in fiber, vitamins and minerals, and low in fat, carcinogens and hormone producing foods.

Foods to Maximize
Fiber means "plant roughage" and is available in every type of plant, including beans, whole grains, vegetables, fruit, seeds and nuts. Whole foods are much higher in fiber than processed foods like bread and pasta. Fiber removes carcinogens, toxins, excess hormones and cholesterol from the body. According to The Cancer Project of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), an ideal goal is 40 grams of fiber per day.

Each plant food contains a unique mix of vitamins and minerals. By eating plants from all colors of the rainbow, we get all of the antioxidants and cancer-fighting compounds we need to keep our bodies strong. Vitamins and minerals are temperature sensitive, so cooking below 200°F will retain maximum nutrition. Additionally, cooking in water may also cause nutrient loss.

Foods to Minimize
Added fat in the diet inevitably leads to excess body fat. This body fat produces hormones which may fuel certain types of cancers, such as breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. Cooking without added oils will help lower fat intake. Dr. Neal Barnard, renown cancer prevention expert, recommends fat should only be 10% of total calorie intake.

Another powerful hormone producer is dairy products. They tend to stimulate production of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which may fuel these same types of cancers. Countries with the highest intake of dairy products also have the highest rates of breast and prostate cancer.

Anytime animal tissue is cooked, it can create carcinogens which may initiate the cancer process in the body. The longer or hotter the meat is cooked, the more carcinogens are created. Studies show that meat intake is directly related to increased rates of leukemia, colon cancer and kidney disease. Other carcinogens may come from food preservatives, air pollution, tobacco smoke or many other sources.

Saladmaster cookware makes it easy to strengthen our bodies' defenses against cancer by making high-fiber, low-fat meals with maximum nutrient retention. This is achieved because cooking can be conducted at a low heat and without using water or adding oil.

Gluten Free - Not Flavor Free

Martes, 05/15/2012 - 4:46pm -- Saladmaster
Gluten Free - Not Flavor Free

By Melinda Myers

Don't let going gluten-free mislead you into thinking there will no longer be flavor in your daily diet. The wonderful news is that vegetables and fruits do not include gluten so you can eat all of the tasty foods that you might plant (or purchase) for your raw recipies.

It's never too early to start with the year's gardening plan. Gather your favorite recipes and prepare a list of the most common vegetables. This grocery list can be converted into this year's garden plan.

Start by identifying those vegetables best suited to your climate. Greens like lettuce, spinach, mustard and kale perform and taste best when grown in cool temperatures. That means spring and fall for cold weather gardeners and winter for those gardening in milder climates. These vegetables are also more tolerant of shade.

Raw recipes that use root crops like radishes, beets and carrots can tolerate half a day of shade, but need well-drained soils for best results. Try growing these in raised beds or containers if your soil is heavy or poorly drained.

Tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons and any plant that you eat the flowers or fruits, require the most sunlight and most prefer warm soil and air to grow, flourish and produce. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are the exception. These vegetables have the best flavor when harvested in cooler temperatures. They even tolerate a light frost that can improve their flavor.

Next assess your available space. Some vegetables like corn require quite a bit of space to produce a substantial harvest. Other vegetables like tomatoes produce lots of fruit with minimal space. Vine crops like pole beans and squash can be trained up a trellis or fence or grown in a container on a deck or patio.

Finally, look at the cost of the vegetables on your list. You may want to grow those that are costly or hard to find, and visit the farmers market for the vegetables that are more affordable.

Once the harvest begins, try eating produce as fresh from the garden as possible. Avoid breading and sauces with gluten-containing grains. Fresh-from-the-garden vegetables prepared in Saladmaster cookware will add nutrients and flavor to your gluten-free meal!

Feel the Burn - Burn the Fat

Viernes , 05/04/2012 - 10:47am -- Saladmaster
Feel the Burn - Burn the Fat

By Kathy Smith, fitness expert, author and TV personality

To keep our bodies burning fat, we need to keep it guessing! Changing our exercise routine as well as adding interval training into our daily exercise routine will keep our bodies working hard and burning more calories. Cooking with Saladmaster will help us keep the fat off when we're cooking, and so will a new way of exercising!

Interval training will help you look better and feel better. Interval training is personal-trainer-talk for a burst of extra energy and intensity intermittently during a workout. For example, you're trotting on your treadmill at 4mph. Then, itermittently, you rev it up to 8mph for 30 seconds. This rev-up is a dig-down-deep exertion that you will maintain for only a short time. This rev-up period is something that you will do throughout your workout.

Here are four reasons why you should add interval training to your workout routine:

  1. Interval training burns calories faster! As you workout, your body establishes a certain metabolic rate that matches the workout rate. By adding a surge of high-intensity, you can increase that metabolic rate. Your body will burn calories at that higher rate longer than the duration of your high-intensity interval.
  2. Interval training increases your fitness level. The rhythm of an aerobic workout is good, but your body's fitness level adjusts to that rhythm. Without an extra physical push, you will not increase your speed, muscle, or endurance. Only by adding interval training will your body get fitter.
  3. Interval training sheds intramuscular fat. Do you have a zone of stubborn fat on your behind, your gut, or your thighs? Some of that fat may be what's called intramuscular fat. Your typical humdrum workout sessions can't touch this storage of fat; the only way to reduce it is by adding interval training.
  4. Interval training makes your workout routine more exciting and enjoyable. First, interval training breaks up the monotony of a clock-watching workout. Second, interval training gives you something to look forward to; if you're exerting every few minutes, that burst of energy helps you maintain anticipation. Also, interval training causes your body to shoot a burst of feel-good hormones into the blood stream, compensating for the extra physical push.

Keeping body fat at bay is made so much easier when you combine your Saladmaster healthy cooking routine with a smart exercise program. So fight the fat and experience the feel-good and look-good benefits that only good health can bring!

Introducing Your Baby to Solid Foods

Making fresh, homemade food for your baby is easy, economical and good for the environment!

Key points to remember when making homeade baby food and introducing solid foods:

  • When introducing new food to your baby, follow the four day wait rule - don't introduce more than one new food at a time. This will test for any food allergies your baby may have.
  • Options - babies are just like the rest of us, they have their own individual likes and dislike and their own tolerance to different foods and textures. Experiment with different foods to find the ones that your little one likes.
  • When preparing homemade baby food, make sure hands, cooking utensils and pans are clean. Plus, if you own Saladmaster, you're already ahead of the game because Saladmaster pans are made with 316Ti Stainless Steel that protects the quality, purity and flavor of food; resists chemcial reaction with the acids and enzymes in food; and is easy to clean.
